Machine Learning can help government to deploy better policy

Recently, I participated in “Crime Category identification Problem on Kaggle”. The problem asked to identify the category of crime based on various features like geographic location, date and time. I am thinking that governments in developed economies would have access to a very granular information in terms of demographics, education, employment status etc. For example, UK government should have this information at the postal ZIP code level - which is as good as a high rise building or a few houses.

Would any one know, if these governments are using this information for their planning and security manpower staffing in more crime prone area based on category?

Data Science folks, needs your input on this!

Thanks, Mark
