What is difference between .Rmd file and normal file in R

I want to build a documentation using R so I have searched on the internet for this I found that there is the way in called mardowning by which we can create a documentation file.I want to main differences between normal R and markdown file and how it helps in the industry.

@harry - There is not a lot of difference between two files you can run your R code in both files.The major difference between them is.Rmd files are used for Documentation and normal R file is just used for running normal R codes.
